Yields: Approximately, 3 dozen

1 C       dried Ohelo Berries (currants)

1 C       finely chopped dried pineapple

1/4 C    finely chopped dried mango

1/2 C    finely chopped dried papaya

(Alternatives to the currants, pineapple, mango, papaya – approximately 2 1/2 cups total of any combination of dried fruits such as: raisin, dried dates, dried figs, dried apricot, dried cherries, dried cranberries.)

2 C       finely chopped pitted prunes (dried Plums)

1 C       finely chopped Macadamia Nuts (Alternatives: pecans or walnuts)

1/4 C    sweetened flaked coconut If you use unsweetened coconut, you can sweeten the sugarplums up with a topping later, if you prefer.

3 T        orange juice squeezed fresh from the orange. (Alternative: orange liqueur)

Toppings are Optional

1/2 C      unsweetened flaked coconut. They resemble dancing hula skirts! Well, not so much :) (Alternative toppings: confectioner’s sugar, dark chocolate powder or flakes, finely chopped nuts*** ).

Directions

I prefer to chop the ingredients up by hand but you can use a food processor for a more uniformed look and it’s way quicker.

Mix all the ingredients together and form them into balls that are approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

Sprinkle on your preferred topping (it’s delicious plain also).

I wrap each of the completed balls in it’s own piece of cling wrap. I use a little bow to hold the wrap together and to give it some color. This helps the sugarplum balls to keep it’s shape.

Refrigerate in an air-tight container until ready to eat.

Pleasant Dreams!

Stevia (comes from a leaf and is a sugar substitute) – I would say that this is not a good topping choice. This is a highly concentrated sweetener and difficult to control the amount on such a small confection. Too much, will make the taste bitter.

Confectioner’s Sugar – This topping is recommended for a little extra sweet.

Cocoa Powder (the one used in hot chocolate) – This is also a good topping to use if you like chocolate. However, I recommend using dark chocolate powder instead. It’s a matter of preference but the hot chocolate powder seemed just a bit too sweet for us.

Spirulina (blue-green algae, powdered form)- known for it’s health benefits.  All of my testers grimaced at the moldy green color and a couple outright refused to try it but those who did, including myself, actually thought it tasted okay. Actually, it’s almost difficult taste the Spirulina. You just need to get over the fuzzy green visuals.

I’ve also read that Spirulina promotes mental clarity. (As you can see, I did have a reason for giving this topping a try.) My “non-scientific” conclusion is that Spirulina DOES work: Personally, I felt that my mind was clearer than it usually was, that late at night.
