Fake It Till You Make It

January 23rd, 2009 · 4 Comments

In the last Confessions articles I talked about a reality show on VH1. Well, since we’re heading towards Valentine’s Day and romance. I thought I’d like to talk about another one of my favorite VH1 reality shows, The Pick Up Artist.

You know, it’s the show where Mystery and his colleagues called “Wing Man/Woman” transform young men with dating handicaps, into confident pickup artists who learn how to attract romantic prospects into their lives.

For those of you who haven’t seen the show, it’s very entertaining. I know what you’re thinking, “Hey Lilly, you like all reality shows.” But that’s not entirely true, there are a few that I don’t care for. I can’t think of any right now but I know there’s one out there somewhere.

Now, if you’re lucky to have found some loved one to spend Valentine’s Day with, congratulations. But the truth is that there are so many people out there who are not so lucky and would put themselves out there to find love.

So that brings us to The Pick Up Artist.  At the beginning of the show, the young men get hair cuts, new clothes and some bling. Basically they get a new persona, at least visually. This is the beginning of what I call Fake It Till You Make It.

Role playing involves taking on the role of someone else. Basically, the boys are just playing a role at this point.

Good actors can portray their role realistically by becoming their character. Believe me, these young men are not actors actors.

The boys are released into a nightclub where they “pretend” to be the pick up artist that they hope to become but complete strangers; to themselves mostly. They dress up in costume and act out the role of a cowboy or businessman, or what have you.

Lots of couples engage in this type of dress up role playing, even later in their relationships, in an effort to “spice it up” so to speak. This type of role playing often is a prelude to intimate seductions so many couples introduce this technique to their sex life to prevent it from becoming too routine.

But this type of role playing is fleeting because you are not held accountable for what you do. It’s as if you are someone else and once the role playing is over, you go back to what you did before. Actors use this technique in their performances but once the show’s over, they move on to playing a role of a different character.

The role playing in The Pick Up Artist becomes permanent, however, as Mystery’s goal is to transform, the boys, not make them into actors. The guys are held accountable for whatever happens. If they make a mistake, they need to correct it.

If they fall on they’re b-hinds, they need to get up and continue doing so until they have “Mastered” their techniques.

At the end of the show there remains one winner and he is named the ”Master Pick Up Artist.” He wins some prizes and gets to go on the road with Mystery and the gang.

What really happens as the show progresses is that the boys begin to become the character of whom they initially visualized themselves as wanting to be.  As they become confident in their role playing, their vision of themselves gets embedded in their subconscious mind and they BECOME their vision.

To some extent, the cheesy pick up moves may get someone through the initial stages of meeting someone but true success comes when you believe in yourself and THAT is what I like about the show and what Mystery is accomplishing there.

Once they realize that their true “love” is really themselves, they start to attract others as well. As the show progresses, you will find that the guys not only start attracting women but you will also notice that, unlike most other reality tv shows, the cast members actually become closer to eachother, as opposed to fighting.

I liked Pick Up Artist. Some parts were a bit over the top and superficial. But, at its heart it was about transformation and helping young guys gain or ‘fake’ the confidence they need to meet women…

I agree that some parts were over the top and superficial but the heart was there. Didn’t much care for the use of the feather boa (sp?) and the other accessories. But it worked!
